Justice Minister Lord McNally gave a speech at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb

Justice Minister Lord McNally visited Croatia to discuss the country’s accession to the European Union next year and the UK’s plans for reform of the European Court of Human Rights and gave a speech at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb.

On 20 February 2012, Lord McNally was hosted by the Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Zagreb, prof.dr.sc. Zoran Parać. Lord McNally gave a speech to a number of Croatian officials, dignitaries and Law students.  The President of the Republic of Croatia Ivo Josipović, president of the Supreme Court Branko Hrvatin, rector of the University of Zagreb Aleksa Bjeliš, members of the British Embassy and a group of Chevening scholars were also present.

The topic of the speech was judicial reforms in the process of accession to the EU, with emphasis on the work of the European Court of Human Rights.

Lord McNally said: "As a strong supporter of enlargement, let me say how very pleased the UK is with the results of your recent referendum.''

After the speech, Lord McNally officially handed over a volume of European Court reports that were donated by British Judge Sir Peter Roth.

"Croatia has been taking forward reform for over six years and judicial reform in particular has been at the centre of this. Tackling corruption, reforming legal systems and improving judicial practice are continuous processes and we fully appreciate how difficult they are, but also how important."

He added: "Croatia is an example to the rest of the region that hard work and determination can produce results, and in this case, the prize of EU accession."
