LECTURES
 
 
The lecture given in one day is consisted of three minor parts of lecture, duration of which is approximately 120 minutes per each, with the 30-min break between the lectures.
 
Lectures are mostly accompanied by PowerPoint presentations that are made available in PDF format on  the present Portal. Students are kindly asked to print their own copies of the notes (handouts) for the particular lectures, that shall be used as a help to monitor lecture.

The aim of the lectures is to familiarize students with the material and to give them the necessary knowledge for taking the exam, but also to provide them with the broader view and further explainations for the queries and questions, concluding with the big picture approach.

In order to achieve these goals, the focus is placed on interactivity within the timetable possibilities, and students are encouraged to debate and contribute to discussions by presenting their own independent standpoints and its reasoning.
However, this method requires a previous preparatory work of the students for each lecture, so it is highly recommended that students pre-read the relevant parts of the literature, in accordance with the topic of the lecture.
 
 
 

UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL

 

Maritime and Transport Law

 

 

The Course on Maritime and Transport Law consists of lectures that aim to provide students with general insight and basic knowledge regarding all branches of Transport law, with special emphasis on the Maritime law. The Course explains the position of Transport law within the system of legal and economic sciences. Students are introduced to the basics of international maritime trade, as well as other transport branches: inland waterways, road, rail and air transport. Lectures include an overview of the new market trends in the international trade of goods, and characteristics of the multimodal transport. Additionally, Transport law examines the protection of passengers' rights within the domestic and international transport by sea, road, rail and air.

Insurance Law

 

Insurance, in its broadest meaning, holds a paramount position in everyday life and activities of individuals and legal persons. Modern economic life and transport of goods and services is unthinkable without a proper insurance coverage. A long development of this legal branch as well as a wide range of human (economic) activities led to the emergence of a considerable number of highly specialized legal insurance institutes and different insurance contracts. Almost every lawyer will come in touch with Insurance law in their field of work: privately, as a party to an insurance contract, or professionally, as a legal representative of one of the contracting parties. Therefore, it is very important that every law student/future lawyer is familiar with fundamentals of Insurance law and that this knowledge ensures easier dealing with specific problems and terminology of Insurance law in practice.

Each year, a number of practicioners (courts, industry) are invited to hold lectures on specific points of interest.

Maritime Law I - Maritime Transport

 

 

Through the lectures on Maritime law I - Maritime Transport, students acquire essential knowledge on the legal regulation of maritime transport. Knowledge of the legal regulation of the transport of goods and passengers is essential for a comprehensive study of Commercial law and legal issues that arise when contracts on sale of goods and services occur. This Course is closely associated with the Course on Maritime Law II - Shipowners' liability, with which it complements and makes a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the legal regulation of the shipping business.

Method of examination is an collaborative oral exam in the Courses on Maritime law I - Maritime Transport and Maritime Law II - Shipowners' liability.

 

The prerequisite for taking the exam is a positive review of seminar paper that relates to the topic from any of these two Courses. Topic is chosen by a student with a prior consultation with the elected supervisor / examiner.

 

 

 

Maritime Law II - Shipowner's Liability

 

 

Through the lectures on Maritime Law II - Shipowners' liability, students receive the necessary information on international and national legal regulation of the important issues of tort liability of shipowners (shipping companies), the general limitation of liability, shipowners' property law liabilities and resources of marine insurance claims in actions for damages. In addition to exploring and mastering the material of the Maritime Law I - Maritime Transport, the students acquire the necessary systematic and comprehensive view of contract and tort liabilites for damages of shipping companies. In addition, students recognize the specific rules of legal regulation of maritime activities in relation to the general rules on general Commercial (and Civil) law.

Insurance Law - General Part

 

 

Through the lectures on Insurance Law – General Part, student gain necessary general knowledge of the legal system regulating the insurance industry. In modern commercial business insurance is of a particular importance. Therefore, the study of the legal framework of that buisness must include the area of ​​Insurance law. Subject Insurance Law – General Part is connected with the Course on Marine Insurance. In addition, it is also connected with the courses which cover the matter of Company law since, inter alia, the frame of this Course covers the specific norms on the establishment of companies engaged in insurance business. Finally, it is related to the subjects covering matters of Commercial law because it emphasizes the specifics related to the conclusion and execution of insurance contracts.

Marine Insurance

 

 

Through the lectures on Marine Insurance, students get important information regarding this vitaly important area of ​​ insurance. Thus, the students complete their general knowledge of insurance matters gained from the Course Insurance Law – General Part. The study of maritime insurance is necessary because of its specificity and diversity in relation to general insurance law as well as the economic importance of maritime transport as a vital part of international trade.

Method of examination is an collaborative oral exam in the course Insurance Law – General Part and Marine Insurance.

 

The prerequisite for taking the exam is a positive review of seminar paper that relates to the topic from any of these two Courses. Topic is chosen by a student with a prior consultation with the elected supervisor / examiner.

 

 

Transport Law

 

 

Through the lectures on Transport Law, students receive general and specific knowledge concerning domestic and international regulation of rail, road and air transport. This Course is closely related to the Courses on Maritime law I - Maritime Transports and Maritime Law II - Shipowners' liability, as they jointly form a systematic overview of Transport law. In addition, the Transport Law is associated with the subjects in the field of general Company law since it explores, among other things, special conditions regarding the establishment and operation of companies engaged in land transportation.

 

 

MARITIME LAW - CHOSEN TOPICS

 

The Course has a scientific-research seminar status. The content of the Course, as well as the literature for the exams, is chosen individually according to the students and their interests in the choice of the theme for the doctoral dissertation. This enables individual work with students focused towards that area of their doctoral dissertation's topic, with reference to the connected fields of research. The course focuses on a research of legal institutes within the Maritime law field.

An original scientific research is conducted on the seminar, which should result in a scientific paper.

The examination is conducted through an oral exam.

 

 

TRANSPORT LAW - CHOSEN TOPICS

  

The Course has a scientific-research seminar status.
