FreSsco seminar takes place in Zagreb

On 27th October 2017 an international FreSsco seminar was held in the hall of the University of Zagreb. The topics of the seminar were Recent developments and proposed changes in the area of posting and family benefits’ coordinationThe seminar was organized by FreSsco network in cooperation with the Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb. The lecturers at the seminar were experts from the FreSsco team (university teachers and scientists), local experts and representatives of the European Commission. FreSsco  is  a European network of independent experts in the fields of free movement of workers and social security coordination in the European Union. It covers  32 countries (28 EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland). The network is funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the University of Ghent and Eftheia. Zagreb Law hosts summer school...
Zagreb law faculty hosted 'Central Asia and Central Europe: Summer Seminar in Legal Studies'  in Zagreb and Zadar from 11-18 June 2017. This is the second summer school done in cooperation with AUCA (American University of Central Asia) in Kyrgizstan. Five students from AUCA and five from Zagreb law participated in the event together with fauculty members. The Summer School in Human Rights is an annual event between the two universities. The purpose of the summer school is to discuss and analyze legal and societal issues that influence the field of human rights in Kyrgyzstan, Croatia, and the wider regions of Central Asia and the Balkans. The partnership between AUCA and the University of Zagreb will be further strengthened with seminars, and student and faculty exchanges in the future.

The Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb hosted 6th Bosnian Herzegovinian-Croatian-Turkish Jurist Days“ from 19 to 23 April 2017. The topic of this year's Conference was „The Legal Framework for Economic Competitiveness“. Professors from law faculties from Sarajevo, Istanbul and Zagreb presented and discussed their papers at four panels: law and economics, criminal and administrative law, commercial law, labour and financial law. Next trilateral Conference will take place in Istanbul in 2018.

At the invitation of H.E. mr. Branko Hrvatin, the President of the Supreme Court of The Republic of Croatia, H.E. Mr. Zhou Qiang, the Chief Justice of the People's Court, led a delegation to visit the Republic of Croatia from 22 to 25 April 2017. The honourable Mr. Zhou and other members of the delegation visited the Faculty of Law on 24 April and met with the faculty Board.

9th International Spring Course...

From 2 to 8 of April 2017, the Inter-University Centre in Dubrovnik hosted the 9th edition of the International Spring Course "Crime Prevention through Criminal Law & Security Studies", which was organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, with the support of organizing partners Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (Freiburg, Germany) and De Paul University (Chicago, USA). After going through a selection process, about 30 participants from all over the world (United States of America, United Kingdom, China, Italy, Germany, Iran, Romania, Finland, Netherlands, Lithuania, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina...) had the opportunity to attend presentations of renown scholars and professors who discussed various topics related to this year's course title: Criminal Law and Human Rights.

New cooperation agreement with Loyola...

Delegation of Zagreb Law faculty visited the United States this March and concluded a new cooperation agreement with Loyola University Chicago school of Law. The cooperation covers Loyola's LLM Program for International Lawyers and is available to several Zagreb Law students. Vice dean for international cooperation prof. Derenčinović also visited our existing partners at DePaul University to discuss further forms of cooperation, and intitiated a new cooperation proposal with Norhwestern University.

Faculty of Law Zagreb joins CABUFAL...

Three member delegation of the Faculty of Law in Zagreb participated at the kick off meeting for CABUFAL project.University of Montenegro organized a three-day conference in Budva from 23-26 March upon the realization of the Erasmus + project 'Curricula refreshment, boosting of international cooperation and improving human, technical and library resources (CABUFAL) ". CABUFAL is funded by the European Commission and is one of 147 out of 736 projects selected for funding, with a total value of 556,300 euros. The goal CABUFAL is to promote regional and international visibility of the Faculty of Law of the University of Montenegro, study visits to teaching and research partner institutions and their stay in Montenegro, purchase of 70,000 euros worth of equipment, as well as the purchase of literature worth 90,000 euros and access to electronic sources of literature .

Fulbright scholar prof. Tuan Samahon...

During spring and early summer 2017 the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb will be hosting professor Tuan Samahon, a U.S. Fulbright scholar. He will closely work with the Department of Administrative Science, researching on transparency and access to information. Professor at the Faculty of Law, Villanova University, US, Tuan Samahon teaches and writes on aspects of the separation of powers, including the appointment and removal of executive and judicial officials. His scholarship has been published in the Stanford Law Review, Ohio State Law Journal, Hastings Law Journal, William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal, and the University of Chicago Legal Forum, among others. He teaches separation of powers, constitutional law, federal courts, and civil procedure. Professor Samahon was named "Professor of the Year" by his students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

IUC’s 9th International Spring Course...

We are glad to announce IUC’s 9th International Spring Course Crime Prevention through Criminal Law & Security Studies titled ‘Criminal Law and Human Rights’. The course will take place from 3rd to 8th April, 2017 in Dubrovnik (Croatia), and is open to all international graduate and postgraduate law students. The academic sponsor of the Course is the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb (Croatia), and the organizing partners are Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (Freiburg, Germany) and DePaul University (Chicago, USA).

All other relevant information about the Course are available on the Course website (www.pravo.unizg.hr/KP/crimeprevention). The Application Committee will select a limited number of participants who should have completed a minimum of two years of legal studies. Applications should be submitted by March 1st, 2017.

Prof. Zhu Weiyi of the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) delivered an intensive two week course withinrse in Zagreb. the course 'Introduction to Chinese Law' during January on the topic 'A comparative study of China's securities law'. Within the international cooperation recently set up between the two institutions, prof. Zhu Weiyi is the second of seven lecturers to hold an intensive course in Zagreb. Prof. Weiyi is currently a professor of securities laws at China University of Political Science and Law.

Head of International cooperation and projects office Andrea Mišković represented Zagreb law faculty at the annual International day and fair at the Faculty of law, University of Bergen on 18 and 19 January. Presentation about Zagreb law faculty was held and participants and students had a chance to get acquainted with exchange programme in Zagreb. Several new agreements with european universities have been discussed.

Zagreb Law signs first cooperation...

Delegation of the Zagreb Law faculty: Dean  Dubravka Hrabar and vice dean for international cooperation prof. Davor Derenčinović visited on 16 January 2017 Faculty of law, University of Chile (Facultad de Derecho, Universidad de Chile) and concluded the first ever general cooperation and student exchange agreement with another south american law faculty. Agreement was signed by dean Dubravka Hrabar and dean of the Faculty of Law, Universiy of Chile prof. Davor Harašić Yakšić. Faculty of Law, University of Chile and Faculty of Law in Zagreb agreed on exchange of students and staff, collaborative research, joint seminars and conferences, academic publications and other forms of cooperation.

Prof. Qin Huaping of China University...

Prof. Qin Huaping of the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) will deliver an intensive two week course within the course 'Introduction to Chinese Law' during January on the topic 'International Air Law'. Within the international cooperation recently set up between the two institutions, prof. Qin Huaping is the first of seven lecturers to hold an intensive course in Zagreb. She currently holds the positions of researcher of the Institute of Air and Space Law, CUPL, deputy director of the Research Institute of Private International Law, International Law School and director of Overseas Development Office of the International Law School, CUPL.

Zagreb Law presents at...

In the period between 6th and 12th of December 2016, a delegation of the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, visited one of the top universities in South Korea - Sungyungkwan University in Seoul. Within the scope of this visit, the members of the delegation, Assist. Prof. Hrvoje Lisičar (Chair of Legal Informatics), Assist. Prof. Maja Munivrana Vajda (Chair of Criminal Law), Assist. Prof. Marko Jurić (Chair of Legal Informatics) and Assist. Prof. Aleksandar Maršavelski (Chair of Criminal Law) participated in a "Roundtable Conference on Cybercrime in Transnational Society", which took place at the Law School of the Sungkyunkwan University (Seoul, 8-9 December 2016). Our faculty members presented and discussed on various topics related to cybercrime with leading Korean academics, such as seizuring and search for digital evidence in cybercrime, implementation of the Cybercrime Convention, standard principles of artificial intelligence society, procedural powers pursuant to the Cybercrime Convention, online hate speech, challenges in regulating cybersecurity, cyberterror and cyberwarfare.

Zagreb Law signs a cooperation...

Faculty of Law delegation led by prof. Davor Derenčinović visited Shenzhen, China last week and signed a cooperation agreement with Peking University School of Transnational Law. The agreement stipulates students exchange. It is another step forward in extending the cooperation with chinese universities.

Erasmus corner opening

Erasmus corner for students was opened yesterday, 23 November 2016 at the main Faculty building at Trg maršala Tita 14. Thoughtfully decorated area for students and staff was funded by the Erasmus+ programme and supported by the Faculty Board with the help of Andrea Mišković of the International Mobility office and Andrea Horić, the head of the Library. Vice dean for international cooperation prof. Davor Derenčinović opened the event by cutting the ribbon which was followed by a lively reception with students, faculty members and other guests.

CIEL network meeting takes place in...

This year's CIEL network annual meeting took place last Monday, 10 October, in Zagreb and was attended by several CIEL member representatives. The Network encompasses various initiatives including the offering of a Masters Exchange Programme in the field of Comparative, International and European Law (CIEL). This is the ninth meeting of the network after meetings in Toulouse (2009), Dublin (March 2010), Barcelona (October 2010), Antwerp (2011), Maastricht (2012), Mannheim (2013) and Toulouse (2014) and Dublin (2015). The meeting was followed by a trip to Plitvice lakes national park.

AUCA Law Division Conducts a Summer...

The American University of Central Asia (AUCA) Law Division and the University of Zagreb Faculty of Law in Croatia conducted the 2016 Summer School in Human Rights in early September. The week-long seminar tok place in Kyrgyzstan and included five AUCA students, four AUCA professors, five University of Zagreb students and three University of Zagreb professors.

Zagreb Law delegation visits China

In the period between 3rd and 11th of May 2016, a delegation of the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb visited three leading academic institutions in the area of legal education and science in the People’s Republic of China. The members of the delegation, headed by Dean Professor Dubravka Hrabar, Vice-dean for international cooperation and science Professor Davor Derenčinović and Dr. Aleksandar Maršavelski (Chair for Criminal Law), participated in an official visit to China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) in Beijing, East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) in Shanghai, and Institute of Law, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS). Within the scope of this visit, agreements of cooperation have been established, particularly concerning the exchange of faculty and students. Furthermore, several official meetings and presentations were held, with the purpose of providing information about different possibilities of international cooperation. Various research and teaching activities of our Faculty were presented, with special regard to the fields of cooperation that can be offered to foreign professors and students (possibility of establishing an LL.M. programme in English, exchange through Erasmus+ framework, courses offered at the Inter-University Centre in Dubrovnik, publishing activities etc.).

Professor Denis Edwards from Law Faculty of Chinese University of Hong Kong will give a lecture titled “Waving the Rules: Judicial Discretion and Breaches of Environmental Law”. The lecture will take place on Friday 22 April 2016 at 12:00 o’clock in the faculty hall at the main building on Trg maršala Tita 14. The lecture will be held in English language without translation. 

Denis Edwards, a graduate of Glasgow University and the Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, is an Advocate in Scotland and a Barrister in London. He has appeared in several cases before the UK Supreme Court and in a number of cases in Scotland and England on EU law and environmental law. He is also a law teacher and has held positions in the UK, USA and Germany. He is currently a member of the law faculty of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

New bilateral agreement signed with...

Bilateral cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Law and the American University of Central Asia from Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, was signed on 23 February 2016. Student exchange in the form of summer schools for top students was stipulated. Professor Andrew Wachtel, AUCA rector, gave a very visited lecture entitled: "Who is Who? Making Ethnic Citizens in Southeast Europe and Central Asia.".

Zagreb Law participates at Bergen Law...

Faculty of Law, University of Bergen hosted its 8th “International Day” on Thursday 21 January 2016. Delegation of Zagreb law led by vice dean prof. Davor Derenčinović participated by giving a presentation of our university. Zagreb Law had a stand at the universities’ fair and had a chance to provide Bergen students with information about the exchange possibilities and the study programme at our faculty. In addition to recruiting future students, this event was also a good opportunity to meet colleagues from other universities, discuss future cooperations and strengthen the existing ones.

Delegation of Maribor Law Faculty...

Delegation of the Law Faculty of the University of Maribor led by the dean prof. Vesna Rijavec visited Zagreb Law School on the 17th of December 2015. The present cooperation between the two institutions and future plans, especially regarding the participation of students in Zagreb in moot court competition in Maribor, exchange of students and teachers, participation of students in Maribor IUC courses was discussed at the meeting. After meeting at the dean's office, reception for the Board and more than fifty students of the Law Faculty of the University of Maribor was organized in the Hall of the Faculty with appropriate program and the participation of student associations of the Zagreb Law Faculty.

Zagreb Law students win first place...

Students of the Faculty of Law Andrea Ruba, Katarina Šavuk, Alma Yasin and Borna Dejanovic won the first place at the regional student competition Big Deal. Big Deal is a competition in commercial law and company law organized by law firms members of the Association Top-tier Legal Adriatic, and it presents a simulation of Merger & Acquisition transactions or transactions of takeover of the company. The competetion is held entirely in English, and includes work on a thorough analysis of the company (due diligence), drawing up a contract of sale of business shares (Share Purchase Agreement) and the negotiation and drafting of agreements on mutual rights and obligations of holders of business shares (Shareholders' Agreement).

Delegation of Sarajevo Law faculty...

Delegation of the Faculty of Law, University of Sarajevo consisting of the dean prof. Borislav Petrovic, Vice Dean prof. Meliha Povlakić and Vice Dean asst.prof. Edin Halapic visited the Faculty of Law on 9 December 2015 at the invitation of the Zagreb Law faculty Board. The present cooperation between the two institutions, cooperation through Erasmus + partner countries and the common organization of summer schools were discussed at the meeting. Plans were made to mark the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Faculty of Law, University of Sarajevo.

Zagreb Law team wins regional round...

A team of four students from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law, won the regional round of the Price Media Law Moot Court competition held in Belgrade from 4th to 6th December 2015. Members of the team are 4th and 5th year students Mirta Horvat, Valentina Jakopec, Tihana Krajnović and Matea Perica. In addition to the team's overall win, Matea Perica and Tihana Krajnović also received Best Oralist and Best Oralist Runner Up individual awards. The team was coached by Marko Jurić, DSc (Chair of Legal Informatics), with the assistance of Iva Kuštrak Managić, Filip Kufrin, Marina Gutschy and previous competitors on this moot court. 

With this win, our team won the spot in international round of the Price Media Law Moot Court, which will take place in Oxford, England from 30 March until 2 April 2016.

This year’s moot case concerned the rights to privacy and freedom of expression on social networks, and their possible limitations in the context of incitement to hatred and terrorism (http://pricemootcourt.socleg.ox.ac.uk/case-and-rules/).

To mark the International Day of Fight against Corruption, the Chair of Criminal Law of the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, organized a round table on 7/12/2015 and a workshop on 8/12/2015 titled “Promoting Compliance Strategies and Preventing Corruption in the Private Sector”. The event was organized within the scope of the project of the Croatian Science Foundation project titled “Multidisciplinary Research Cluster on Crime in Transition – Trafficking in Human Beings, Corruption and Economic Crime“ and with the support of the “Alumni Grants Program 2015“. His Excellency Mr. Ide, the...

His Excellency Mr. Ide, the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Croatia visited the Faculty of Law in Zagreb on Tuesday 24 November and met the Faculty board. Prof. Dubravka Hrabar, the dean, prof. Davor Derenčinović, the Vice dean for international relations and Andrea Mišković discussed the future cooperation between the two countries and law faculties. His Excellency later on gave a lecture on the topic  "Nature of territorial disputes in Asia" . Many students and Faculty members joined the lecture and an interesting discussion afterwards.

Delegation of Lomonosov University in...

The delegation of Lomonosov University Faculty of Law (Moscow) composed of assist.prof.dr.sc. Gleb Bogush, assist.prof.dr.sc. Maria Filatovna and students Pavel Stepanov (PhD student) and Nataliia Kirillova (Master student), from 3-10 November 2015 visited Zagreb Faculty of Law. During their visit, the delegation participated at the Roundtable organized by Faculty of Law, Department of Criminal Law and Max Planck Institute on Foreign and International Criminal Law,: Refugee Crisis in Europe and Prevention of Trafficking in Human Beings " on 6 November 2015 and both assistant professors gave lectures to interested students and faculty.

During the meeting with the the Dean of the Faculty of Law prof.dr.sc. Dubravka Hrabar and the Vice-Dean for international cooperation and science prof.sc.sc. Davor Derenčinović, it was agreed on the further plans of cooperation as envisaged in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in Moscow this summer. It was decided that the joint conference will take place in September 2016 in Moscow. Soon, the call for participation will be launched and the topic will be announced.The cooperation would also include student exchange, both on master and PhD level.

Dean of the Faculty of Law, prof.dr.sc. Dubravka Hrabar and the Vice-Dean for international cooperation and science, prof.sc.sc. Davor Derenčinović had a meeting on November 6th 2015 with Prof.dr.sc. Hans-Jörg Albrecht, director of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg. They agreed on the further plans of the joint cooperation, primarily concerning the cooperation between two Libraries.

Prof. Davor Derenčinović and prof. Marko Baretić attended the CIEL annual meeting at the University of Dublin last Monday, 5 October. The Network encompasses various initiatives including the offering of a Masters Echange Programme in the field of Comparative, International and European Law (CIEL). This is the eighth meeting of the network after meetings in Toulouse (2009), Dublin (March 2010), Barcelona (October 2010), Antwerp (2011), Maastricht (2012), Mannheim (2013) and Toulouse (2014). Membership in the CIEL Network is a significant development in the internationalisation of the  Zagreb Faculty of Law.

Faculty of Law signs a new...

Faculty of Law signed a cooperation agreement  with the Faculty of Law of the University of Sungkyunkwan Soul on 17 September 2015, which is the oldest university in the Republic of Korea. The signed agreement is a continuation of good cooperation of the faculties which began in the spring of this year when, in collaboration with the Sungkyunkwan University, an international conference entitled " Trans - frontier issues in the 21st Century "  was organized in Zagreb. The signed agreement opens up various opportunities for cooperation, from collaborative research projects through exchange of students and professors.

Scientific conference named Fourth Turkish-Bosnian-Croatian legal days was held from 22 to 24 April 2015 at the Istanbul University Law Faculty. It was attended by experts from the Istanbul University Law Faculty, University of Sarajevo Faculty of Law and our Faculty. This year's topic was medical law, and the participants of the conference dealt with it from the criminal law, civil law and constitutional law point of view. The conference in Istanbul is a continuation of fruitful cooperation between the Istanbul University Law Faculty and our Faculty which started a few years ago, and this year's co-operation includes the Faculty of Law of the University of Sarajevo. As a part of the opening ceremony of this year's conference of our Faculty professor Ivo Josipovic was awarded an honorary doctorate from Istanbul University.

7th International Spring Course...

From 22nd to 28th of March 2015, the Inter-University Centre in Dubrovnik hosted the 7th edition of the International Spring Course "Crime Prevention through Criminal Law & Security Studies", which was organized by the Criminal Law Chair of Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, with the support of organizing partners Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (Freiburg, Germany) and De Paul University (Chicago, USA). After going through a selection process, nearly 40 participants had the opportunity to attend presentations of renown scholars and professors who discussed various topics related to this year's course title: National vs. International Criminal Adjudication: Shadow on the Wall. Along with presentations given by course directors Professor Davor Derenčinović (University of Zagreb), Professor Richard Farkas (De Paul University) and Dr. Michael Kilchling (Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law), it is important to note lectures given by Professor Hans-Jörg Albrecht, the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (Freiburg, Germany), on "Sentencing in National and International Courts" and Professor Denis Edwards, Visiting Professor at the DePaul University College of Law (Chicago, USA), on "EU Laws and Environmental Crimes".

We woud like to inform students, teachers and associates that professor Andreas Schwartze of the University of Innsbruck will hold a series of lectures within his study visit to our faculty.

On 28th of June 2014 in Sarajevo the workshop „Collective Redress in South East Europe“ will be held, co-organised by the Faculty of Law of the University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). During workshop different mechanisms of collective protection implemented in particular countries of South East Europe as well as in the European Union law will be examined in-depth.

Orientation Day for international...

Faculty of Law in Zagreb is hosting over fifty international exchange students this winter semester. The Orientation Day for Erasmus students took place on Friday, 4th of October 2013. The students were  welcomed by the Dean, Vice Dean for International Cooperation and the ECTS coordinator. Presentations of the courses in English, students' associations, sporting activities, library catalogue and database were held, followed by a tour of the Faculty premises. The students got a chance to receive information about the programme, they met their professors and fellow students and got a lot of practical information relevant for their studies and stay in Zagreb. Members from ten embassies joined our international students at lunch. It was a pleasure to see scholars and graduate students, members of the embassies, and young students engaging in debates and questions over lunch.

On 22 March 2013 the dean of the Faculty of Law Zagreb Prof. Zoran Parac and director of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg  Prof. Hans-Joerg Albrecht formally signed a general cooperation agreement and an agreement on project cooperation between the Max Planck Institute and the Department of Criminal Law on research and prevention of human trafficking. United Nations Audiovisual Library project promotes awareness of international law. Prof. Dr. Maja Seršić, head of the Department of International Law, recorded a lecture for the United Nations Audiovisual Library. Audiovisual Library of the United Nations was established in 1997, pursuant to the Resolution of the General Assembly of the UN,  to provide teaching, research and increase awareness of international law. Audiovisual library currently consists of more than one hundred lectures and the lecture by Professor Seršić on "Article 51 of the UN Charter and the war on terrorism, " is the first lecture recorded by a person from Croatia. Zagreb Law team wins 1st place at the...

Students of the Faculty of Law won the first place at this year's regional South East Europe Price Media Law Moot Court Competition which was held in Belgrade from 14 to 16 December, and thus qualified for the international rounds to be held at Oxford University in April of the following year. Antonija Ivančan won the best speaker award. Jean Monnet Chair of European Public Law trained a six-member team of Ivana Cvitanović, Antonija Ivančan, Filip Kufrin, Kristina Mandić, Dina Salapić and Dora Stulić , with the help of Branka Marusic, the official coach, and in cooperation with Iva Kuštrak, assistant  at the Chair of Civil Law. Price Media Law Moot Court Competition is a competition held since 2008, organized by the University of Oxford, in which teams from all over the world participate.

This is the first group of this kind in the field of social sciences in Europe. SEELS Open Day takes place at the...

South East European Law Schools Network Open Day took place at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb on 28 November 2012. Presentations were held by members of teaching staff on the following topics: network, education and research activities, academic programmes, staff mobility project, training on the 7th framework programme and law journal. After a fruitful and engaged discussion the participants were invited to a lunch reception.

GIZ Open Regional Fund for South East Europe-Legal Reform, supported the SEELS Network in organising Open Days and in publishing and disseminating SEELS promotional materials for the audience.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon...

Professor Hrvoje Sikiric, Chairman of 45th session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York on 17 October 2012. Professor Sikirić informed the Secretary General about the work of UNCITRAL in promoting rights at the international and national level, measures taken by UNCITRAL to increase their visibility, both within the UN system and beyond, and recalled that the Commission attaches increasing importance to providing elaborate technical assistance to adopting texts which directly contributes to continuous and sustainable economic development. At the end of the cordial conversation prof. Sikirić thanked the Secretary-General in Korean. The Secretary-General who did not hide his surprise commended Professor Sikirić for excellent pronunciation and recalled his recent short visit to Croatia.

Professor Hrvoje Sikiric, Chair of...

Professor Hrvoje Sikiric, Vice Dean for International Cooperation of the Law Faculty in Zagreb, spoke as the Chair of the 45th session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCTIRAL) at the meeting of high representatives of the General Assembly which was held on 24 September 2012 in New York. He presented the views of UNCITRAL on the promotion of the rule of law at the national and international level.

New exchange student Orientation Day took place on the 28th September 2012. Thirty - seven foreign students were welcomed by the Faculty choir, their new professors, Croatian student mentors and members of many various students' associations. It was an opportunity for the guest students to learn more about their stay at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb. Lunch reception followed, with three ambassadors and eight other highest ranking diplomats of ten countries from which Zagreb Law is hosting students this academic year. Welcome foreign students!

Faculty of Law hosts the first South...

The First SEE Post-Doc Colloquium in Private Law took place at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb on 27th and 28th of September 2012. It was organized within the framework of the South East European Law School Network (SEELS), financially supported by GIZ Open Regional Fund for South East Europe-Legal reform, and hosted by prof. Tatjana Josipović of the Zagreb Law Faculty. The SEE Post-doc Colloquium addressed the need of intensified information exchange between the young researchers in the region and provided for further development of the legal theory. At the SEE Post-doc Colloquium, 20 outstanding academics from the SEELS members presented their scientific work in presence of their mentors. On the second day of the colloquium the Deans' meeting took place, with the presence of eight deans from the SEELS member law faculties.

Zagreb Law delegation visits three...

Delegation of the Zagreb Law Faculty took a working visit to Istanbul from 19 to 21 June 2012. The delegation, consisting of the dean, prof. Zoran Parać, vicedean prof. Dalibor Čepulo and prof. Tatjana Josipović, visited three law faculties within Istanbul University, Bilgi University and Kadir Has University. In meetings with heads of the faculties it was agreed to enter into bilateral agreements on cooperation that would include exchange of students and teachers as well as the organization of colloquia, seminars and joint cooperation regarding summer schools. Establishment of a joint colloquium in April 2013 was agreed upon with the Law Faculty of the Istanbul University, which will be attended by ten teachers of each faculty. Furthering the cooperation with the respective faculty is also expected within the South East European Law Schools Network (SEELS).

Honorary Doctorate Ceremony for...
The ceremony will be held on Thursday, 28 June 2012 in the aula magna of the Rectorate at 11 o'clock. Faculty of Law has the honor to invite you to a lecture on the occasion of the solemn awarding of honorary doctorate at the University of Zagreb (Doctor Honoris Causa) to professor Mirjan Damaška, Sterling Professor Emeritus of Law and Professorial Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School. The lecture 'Unappreciated presence in international criminal cases'  will take place on Thursday, 28 June at 17 o'clock in the aula magna of the Rectorate of the University of Zagreb, Trg Marsala Tita 14. Professor Damaška received his basic law degree at the University of Zagreb in his native Croatia. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). He began his teaching career at the University of Zagreb Law School. In 1971, he left his native land and accepted a tenured position at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He has been on the faculty of Yale Law School since 1976.

Virginia Gordan, Assistant Dean for International Affairs at the University of Michigan Law School visited the Faculty of Law in Zagreb on 26 and 27 June as a guest of Jean Monnet Chair, the Department of European public law. During the visit, a round table was held  on "Legal Education in the United States and European Union" and an alumni reunion. Alumni of the University of Michigan from our faculty are prof. Sinisa Rodin (LLM 1992), prof. Tamara Perišin (Research Fellow), prof. Tamara Ćapeta (Research Fellow) and Melita Carević (LLM 2011). The University of Michigan has so far given ten stipends for Croatian students.

Professor Hrvoje Sikiric, Ph.D....

At the 45th session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), which is held in New York from 25 June to 6 July 2012, prof. Hrvoje Sikiric was elected President of the Commission and chairman of this year's session. Prof. Sikiric shall be the president  until June next year. The choice of professor Sikirić is a great recognition to the Republic of Croatia, but also to him personally for many active years in UNCITRAL.

Sunčana Roksandić Vidlička, assistant professor at the Chair of Criminal Law  won the second place in the prestigious Moot Court competition in international criminal law, held in Syracuse from 20 to 30 May 2012. It was organized by the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences (L'Istituto Superiore Internazionale di Scienze Criminali) chaired by Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni. Theme of this year's Moot court was "Assessing Patterns of Transnational Organized Crime, the International Criminal Responsibility of Non-State Actors, and the Effectiveness of International Enforcement System." This great success was achieved in competition with more than 70 assistant and associate professors of criminal law in 33 countries.

Capella juris won the first prize at...

Capella juris won the first prize - the Golden Plaque of competition, and 97.66 out of possible 100 points at the 11th Choir Competition in Zagreb, which was held from 1 to 3 June 2012. The choir won in category A and was an absolute winner of the competition since it achieved the highest score of all 23 participating choirs . Also, Capello won a special award - a prize of the competition organizer and sponsor of the Concert Hall Vatroslav Lisinki. Capella juris has been continuously participating in this competition since 2008 and has seen great progress with its conductor Peter Jurica Petrac. Sincere congratulations to the choir Capella juris!

Joint Seminar: Legal Harmonisation with the EU Law -The Case of Croatia, Slovenia and Austria-Selected Topics 2012 " took place this year in collaboration with Law School in Graz, Faculty of Law in Maribor and Zagreb Law Faculty. This seminar is special because it was held for two days at these schools at regular intervals: 29 and 30 March 2012 in Graz, 10 and 11 May 2012 in Maribor and 24 and 25 May 2012 in Zagreb. It was attended by students from the respective law schools, a total of twenty students, eight from each faculty,  amnog who there were student guests from a student exchange program.

The Faculty of Law of the more than 275 years old University of Miskolc – as one of the oldest law faculties in Hungary – celebrated its 30th anniversary in the academic year of 2011/2012. Due to this event, the Faculty organised an international conference of law students on March 5th 2012. Law students were given an opportunity to present and discuss their scientific achievements, to get to know the educational systems of different countries and to establish new relations. Two of our students represented the Faculty of Law in Zagreb with the presentation " Reform of the legal system in the republic of Croatia   -  adjustment to the requirements of the European union".
