Description
The elective course of English for Social Work focuses on academic writing. The course takes a practical approach to a series of topics concerning academic writing aimed at improving the students' writing skills in English for academic purposes. During the first part of the course, the focus is on the academic style. Through a series of exercises, a number of features of the academic style are dealt with, from the proper register to grammatical structures. The next topic is the structure of an academic text, structure of a paragraph and cohesive elements used to connect ideas into a coherent and meaningful whole. Further, the focus shifts onto definitions, simple and academic, and classification. Paraphrasing and summarising are the following techniques dealt with in the course. Finally, exercises are done concerning the interpretation of data represented in the form of charts and diagrams. The final examination consists in a series of written tasks.
